FREDERICK, MD, December 2, 2020—A fleet of boats adorned with lights lined Frederick’s Carroll Creek on November 20 for the annual Sailing Through the Winter Solstice hosted by Color on the Creek. First-time participants DeLeon & Stang built their own boat ‘Reel Fun’ and set sail in support of Phoenix Recovery Academy of Frederick to honor the memory of team member Sandi’s son, Jonathan Riggs.

“My husband and I are very touched by Deleon and Stang’s decision to honor the memory of our son by dedicating and designing its “Sailing Through the Winter Solstice” boat to represent and benefit the Phoenix Recovery Academy,” said Sandi Riggs. “Jonathan lost his battle with addiction and depression and it is our hope that others can be helped through their journey by the work the Phoenix Recovery Academy is doing.”

80% of DeLeon & Stang’s donation to participate in the event will go to Phoenix Recovery Academy of Frederick and 20% towards Color on the Creek, a nonprofit that works to maintain the health of the creek’s ecosystem. The public can vote for their favorite boat for $1 through a secure link and have the option to donate the amount of their choice to accompany their vote. The boats which create a festive spectacle in downtown Frederick will be on display in Carroll Creek until February 5.

“We believe that raising community awareness is vital in helping those in recovery,” said Sandi. “Thank you, DeLeon and Stang for making work seem like family.”
